Purchasing Your Canadian /
acheter votre canadien

BEFORE YOU BUY...

Pre-Purchase Exams

No matter how healthy or sound the Canadian that you are considering purchasing appears, please ALWAYS get a pre-purchase exam.  If the horse's legs do not feel 'clean' or there are any soundness issues, go the extra mile and have x-rays done.  The additional cost of a pre-purchase exam and/or x-rays may increase the overall cost of your new horse but it can save you from heartache and large vet bills in future.  Furthermore, you are protecting yourself as well as the breeder or private seller involved - and the horse.  The horse suffers the most when being tossed about from new home to new home.

It is always considered wisest to use a vet other than the present owner's personal vet - for the obvious reasons.

Note: if the owner gets offended or gives you a hard time about bringing in another vet, be very suspicious.  A reputable breeder and any honest horseperson will completely welcome your bringing in a different vet, they will even encourage it.
